Text beneath the print (subject to OCR spelling errors) NEW NORFOLK,  or Elizabeth Town as it used to be called, lies on the right bank of the Derwent River, twenty-one miles north-west of Hobart, Tasmania. It is in the county of Buckingham, and is a station on the Derwent Valley line, which runs from Hobart to Glenora, some miles farther up the valley. The "Louise" steamer plies three times a week on the river, which ceases to be navigable at New Norfolk. The bridge was opened in the June of i88o; it is six hundred and ten feet long, and cost 65000. The district was chiefly peopled in i8o8 by settlers from Norfolk Island, who were transferred thence under imperative orders from the Home Government. The general tendency in Tasmanian agriculture during the last few years has been to cultivate less wheat and more roots. In 1893 the largest area out of the ten thousand acres under cultivation in this district was devoted to hay; next came wheat, and then gardens and orchards measuring over one thousand acres, and growing chiefly apples and pears; then oats and potatoes, mangolds, peas and hops. This view of New Norfolk will gladden the heart of Kentish men, for the hop-fields are in full prominence. The climate of the island is especially suited to malting and brewing. The numerous breweries not only supply enough for home consumption, but export a large quantity to New South Wales and Victoria. In 1893 the population of the district was 474, and the capital value £327,000. There are an Episcopal, a Wesleyan and a Roman Catholic place of worship, a library, schools and well-appointed lunatic asylum. A successful experiment in fish-culture was made in the municipality at Redlands on the Plenty River, a tributary of the Derwent. The first trout from English spawn wa hatched on 4th May 1864, and the first salmon the next day. Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter
