Fabulous pair of Eugene Lelievpre Watercolour / ink studies of civil war cavalrymen.

Both paintings are in excellent condition with no signs of damage. Images depicting Both northern and southern soldiers on horseback. Both paintings in excellent condition with minor toning to the original median. Wonderful pair of original watercolour and ink paintings from a well registered and known artist.

Both images have been inspected under magnification and both appear to be originals, louped images attached. Both signed lower left. Neither of these paintings bare any edition numbers or printing to suggest anything other than originals of the artists own hand. Similar examples online that are print reproductions all bare edition numbers, print maker or similar marks. These do not.

Biography: Born in 1908, Eugene Leliepvre experienced the exodus of the Great War and as a child attended the French cavalry charge of the cobbled streets of Lille: there he decided his vocation, military historian. Official Painter of the Army since 1951, Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1998, specialized in uniforms of the old regime, he continues to paint in his studio in Montrouge. Equestrian painter Eugene Leliepvre is also known for hunting and animal paintings. He also created numerous dioramas for the Maritime Museum of Paris and fashioned (assisted by his wife) over 300 small mannequins in costumes and equipment of yesteryear. Canada's share of this collection earned him, in 2008, the highest award in North America: "The Star Service Award to distinguished Military Historians of the Company". Liliepvre died in 2013.
