BESCHREIBUNG

Fünfte Gesamtausgabe der Sittenlehre des bedeutenden Kirchenlehrers und späteren Erzbischof von Florenz, beeinflusst von der "Summma theologica" des Thomas von Aquin, den er verehrte.  1523 erhob Papst Hadrian VI. Antonius Florentinus zum Heiligen.

Insgesamt erschienen innerhalb dieser Ausgabe 4 Teile und die Tabula von Johannes Molitoris. Diese Bände gelten als eines der monumentalsten Druckwerke Kobergers. Anhand der Datierungen der Bände erschließt sich, welchen Aufwand ein derartig umfangreicher Druck für den Drucker bedeutete. Hiernach hat dieses Projekt bis zur kompletten Fertigstellung über ein Jahr gedauert.      

Bemerkenswert ist die hübsche Illumination der großen Eingangsinitiale von Band III. „B“ für „Beatus es et bene tibi erit“, die ein wild verschlungenes Groteskenstilleben mit drei Profilköpfen, darunter einem Teufelchen und einem exotischen Vogel (wohl Flamingo) darstellt. Eine weitere Initiale in Grün läuft in rosefarbenem und roten sowie grünen Federwerk über ein Drittel der Kolumne aus, zeigt wiederum eine Profilmaske und oben sitzt ein Vögelchen.

In Bänden und Text vollständige Exemplare sind sowohl in Bibliotheken, als auch im Handel äußerst selten anzutreffen.

Alle Teile identisch.  Gotischer Druck in zweispaltiger, 71-zeiliger Type.  Druckvermerk bzw. Kolophon.

In Teil III eine große, handgemalte, prachtvolle Initiale (10x10cm) in Rot, Blau, Braun und Grün  mit Gesichtern, Grotesken, einem Vogel sowie Ornamenten.

Vier 5- bis 8-zeilige handgemalte, farbige Initialen mit Federwerk und figürlichem Beiwerk. Sonst mit unberührten Initialspatien sowie unrubriziert.

EINBÄNDE

Die fünf Teile sind in folgende vier Einbände gebunden:

Teile I und II ___________ Gebunden in jeweils einen sehr attraktiven, neueren Pergamenteinband unter Verwendung einer liturgischen Notenhandschrift um 1450 mit diversen Federwerksinitialen. Rückseitig altes handschriftliches Titelschild. Spanische Kanten. Sehr guter Zustand ohne Mängel. 

Abmessungen: 41,5 x 29,5 cm.

Teil III  ______

Originaler, gotischer Einband, wohl aus Mainz. Reich blindgeprägtes Schweinsleder über massiven Holzdeckeln. Blindprägungen Schriftband „Maria“ sowie diverse Rollen und Stempel, welche bei Schunke 365a verzeichnet sind (Adler, Blüten, Rautengerank u.a.). Zwei wohl spätere, im Stil der Zeit gefertigte Schließen mit 6 punzierten Beschlägen sowie 8 (statt 10) später aufgebrachten Messingbuckeln (Nägel alle erneuert). Gebunden auf vier Doppelbünden. Guter Zustand, Buchblock fest und stabil. Einbanddeckel und Rücken etwas wurmstichig und mit einigen kleineren Bezugsfehlstellen, insbesondere an den Kanten und Ecken. Deckel beschabt und fleckig. Rücken am unteren Kapital lädiert. Mit einer größeren Makulatur am hinteren Spiegel mit einem Handschriftenfragment, wohl aus dem 14. Jahrhundert.

Teile IV und V ____________

Zusammengebunden in einen sehr attraktiven, neueren Pergamenteinband unter Verwendung einer liturgischen Notenhandschrift um 1450 mit einer großen Prachtinitiale sowie diversen kleineren Federwerksinitialen. Rückseitig altes handschriftliches Titelschild. Spanische Kanten. Sehr guter Zustand ohne Mängel.

Abmessungen: 41,5 x 29,5 cm.

Ränder partiell leicht angestaubt, die letzten Blatt leicht wasserfleckig im Außenrand sowie einigen kleinen Wurmlöchern. Vereinzelt alte handschriftliche Marginalien. Blatt 1 etwas fingerfleckig, sonst sehr sauberes und breitrandiges Exemplar. Keine Risse, Ausrisse oder Fehlstellen.

Teil II  ______

Sehr guter Originalzustand. Kräftiger, fühlbarer Druck auf festem Büttenpapier. Ränder partiell leicht angestaubt, die letzten Blatt leicht wasserfleckig im Außenrand sowie einigen kleinen Wurmlöchern. Vereinzelt alte handschriftliche Marginalien. Blatt 1 sowie letzte 8 Blatt im rechten Außenrand mit perfekt restaurierten, angefaserten Läsuren. Sehr sauberes und breitrandiges Exemplar. Keine Risse, Ausrisse oder Fehlstellen.

Teil III ______

Guter Originalzustand. Vereinzelt schmale Wasserränder in den weißen Rändern, sonst sauberes und breitrandiges Exemplar. Kräftiger, fühlbarer Druck auf festem Büttenpapier. Ränder partiell leicht angestaubt. Anfang und Schluss etwas wurmstichig. Die ersten und letzten Lagen im oberen Rand etwas wasserrandig. Die ersten sechs und die letzten zehn Blatt an der oberen Ecken mit Läsuren, die letzten beiden Blatt mit größeren Eckverlusten ohne Textverluste.  

Teil IV _____

Exzellenter Originalzustand. Kräftiger, fühlbarer Druck auf festem Büttenpapier. Ränder partiell ein wenig angestaubt. Blatt 1 etwas fingerfleckig, sonst äußerst sauberes und breitrandiges Exemplar. Einige kleine Wurmlöcher. Keine Risse, Ausrisse oder Fehlstellen.

Teil V _____

Sehr guter Originalzustand. Kräftiger, fühlbarer Druck auf festem Büttenpapier. Ränder partiell leicht angestaubt. Letzte Blatt mit einigen kleinen Wurmlöchlein. Letzte zwei Blatt mit professionell reparierten Fehlstellen am rechten Außenrand ohne Textverluste. Sehr sauberes und breitrandiges Exemplar. Keine Risse, Ausrisse oder Fehlstellen.

DESCRIPTION

Fifth Edition of the moral teaching of the important church teacher and later Archbishop of Florence, influenced by the "Summma Theologica" of Thomas Aquinas. Pope Hadrian VI. canonized Anthony Florentinus in 1523.

Overall, this issue appeared within four parts and the tab by Johannes Molitoris. These volumes are considered one of the most monumental works by Anton Koberger. Based on the dating of the books will appreciate how much efforts meant such extensive project for the printer. Thereafter, this project has taken to full completion over a year.

Noteworthy is the splendid illumination of the large initial input of Volume III. Letter "B" for "Beatus et bene tibi erit it”, is a wildly intricate Grotesque Still life with three profile heads, including a devil and an exotic bird. 

Copies with complete volumes with complete text are extremely rare to be found in libraries, as well as in trade.

In Part III a large, hand painted, magnificent initial (10x10cm) in red, blue, brown and green with faces, grotesques, a bird and ornaments. Four 5- to 8-line hand painted, coloured initials with floral borders and figural accessories. Otherwise empty initial spaces and unrubricated.

Bound in each case a very attractive, modern vellum with using an original liturgical manuscript around 1450 with various splendid initials. Old handwritten title marks on spine. Spanish edges. Very good condition with no defects.  Sizes: 41.5 x 29.5 cm

Part III _______

Original gothic binding, probably from Mainz. Blind stamped pigskin leather over massive wooden boards. Blind stamped tapes "Maria" as well as various roles and stamps, which are listed in Schunke 365a (eagles, flowers, a.s.o.). Two later clasps, made in the style of the period closing with 6 chased fittings and 8 (instead of 10) brass fittings (nails all renewed). Four compartments. Good condition, book block strong and stable. Covers and spine with slightly worming and with a few minor flaws with respect, especially at the edges and corners. Cover slightly scraped and stained. Sizes: 42.0 x 29.5 cm

Parts IV and V ____________

Bound together in a very attractive, modern vellum with using an original liturgical manuscript around 1450 with various splendid initials. Old handwritten title marks on spine. Spanish edges. Very good condition with no defects. Sizes: 41.5 x 29.5 cm

Corners and margins partial slightly dusty, the last leaves lightly water stained in the outer margins as well as some small wormholes. Some old handwritten marginalia. Leaf 1 finger stained, otherwise very clean and wide-margined copy. No cracks, no tears, no losses.

Part II ______

Very good original condition. Sharp print on strong handmade paper. Corners and margins partial slightly dusty, the last leaves lightly water stained in the outer margins as well as some small wormholes. Some old handwritten marginalia. Leaf 1 and last 8 leaves with perfectly repaired blemishes and defects in the right outer margins. Very clean and wide-margined copy. No cracks, tearing or losses. 

Part III ______

Good original condition. Some small water stains in the margins, otherwise clean and wide-margined copy. Strong, sensible print on strong handmade paper. Margins partial slightly dusty. Little worming on the first leaves and at the end. The first and last gatherings in the upper margin somewhat water stained. The first six and the last ten leaves at the upper corners with blemishes, the last two leaves with larger coner defects without losses of text.

Part IV ______

Sharp print on strong handmade paper. Corners and margins partial slightly dusty, the last leaves lightly water stained in the outer margins as well as some small wormholes. Some old handwritten marginalia. Leaf 1 finger stained, otherwise very clean and wide-margined copy. No cracks, no tears, no losses.

Part V _____

Very good original condition. Strong print on strong handmade paper. Margins  partial slightly dusty. Last leaf with some small worm holes. Last two leaves with professionally repaired defects on the right outer margin without losses of text. Very clean and wide-margined copy. No cracks, tearing or losses.
