"La Pudeur " after A. Houdon, France, 1880/1890

Wonderfully crafted bronze sculpture of a young woman covering herself with a shawl (surprised while bathing); the luxuriant hair is richly decorated with blossoms, delicate leaves lie on the ground.

In 1789, the French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon created a first draft of his idea of a "Freezing Woman". This sculpture formed the starting point for various versions of the theme and the final version of the "Frileuse" is one of Houdon's most famous figures. Another result was the present sculpture "La Pudeur" ("The Shameful" or also "Demure"), which is also called "Frileuse".

Very beautiful and rare execution with filigree elaboration of the individual details by elaborate chasing. The patination on the blossoms and the hair is slightly worn in some places.

Otherwise very good, original condition with medium brown patination. The sculpture is not signed and does not bear a foundry mark. An identical figure with Houdon's signature was sold at an auction house in 2021.

Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828) was one of the most important and successful sculptors of his time. He studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and in 1761 he was admitted to the École royale des Élèves protégés.

He lived and worked in Rome, Germany, France and the USA, where he is said to have been the first European artist to portray Georges Washington. His works are exhibited in the great museums, such as the Louvre in Paris, the Liebieghaus in Frankfurt am Main, the Bode Museum in Berlin or the Musée Fabre in Montpellier, as well as in the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg.

He knew better than any other contemporary sculptor how to bring the fine features of his models to life in marble.

I enjoy beautiful things and it is my greatest pleasure to find them, to lure them into their stories, to spend time with them and then set them free again. Add to that a passionate interest in exceptional and high crafted objects. You surely know the exciting feeling when you see or experience something special, when the heart bounces in excitement and the joy inside it spreads. That's what I wanted more in my life and that's how this shop came about. The foundation stone was a study of literature and art history as well as cultural communication. Curiosity, thirst for knowledge and a lot of collaboration with amazing personalities in the art and design world are how I got myself to where I am today. Through antiquities, history becomes tangible in the literal sense, one can perceive it sensually. They calmly defy the constant change of fashions and the taste of the times. They are like a bridge between past and present. For me personally they are an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Some objects give up puzzles, lock themselves up; others quite frankly reveal their past. They radiate joie de vivre, astonish or enchant us; make a collector's heart beat faster or become good friends and a meaningful place in your lives. They may be bulky or controversial, but they are never boring. I believe the stories, the hands, and the tradition behind the objects are equally as important as their aesthetic qualities. Antique objects can adds so much value to your life, and I personally cannot imagine a home without it. Each piece in my shop has been thoughtfully and personally chosen. What unites them is their craftsmanship, care and attention to detail. Enjoy them.
