Extremely rare and unusual, old-colored woodcut map out of Zacharias Heyns’s edition of Ortelius’ "Epitome". -- Size of sheet: c. 16 x 20,5 cm. With French text on verso. -- in very good condition. --With this exceptional pocket edition of the «Theatrum Orbis Terrarum», the publisher, a son of Peter Heyns, wished to thank Walter del Prato, a Cologne merchant, for marrying his niece. He presented this «Miroir du monde» as an enlargement of his father’s bestseller and a tribute to him. But, instead of the common choice for copperplates, he illustrated the atlas with woodcuts, not based on the father's pocket atlas but on the original maps by Ortelius. "All of the maps for this work are woodcuts. It was one of the last atlases produced using this medium... The atlas and its maps are rarely found" (Burden). The atlas is considered as "the most mysterious atlas of the entire Dutch atlas production." The atlas is highly sought after among collectors, prized for its rarity and the unique appearance of its maps. The second edition of 1615 is virtually unknown, with Koeman locating only 1 example at the Bibliotheque Nationale. || Äusserst seltene und ungewöhnliche, altkolorierte Holzschnitt-Karte aus Zacharias Heyns' französischer Ausgabe von Ortelius' "Epitome". -- Verso mit französischem Text. -- Mit dieser außergewöhnlichen Taschenausgabe des «Theatrum Orbis Terrarum», wollte der Herausgeber, ein Sohn von Peter Heyns, dem Kölner Kaufmann Walter del Prato für die Heirat mit seiner Nichte danken. Er präsentierte den Atlas als Erweiterung des Bestsellers seines Vaters und sogleich als eine Hommage an ihn. Aber anstatt wie üblich die Karten als Kupferstiche herauszugeben, illustrierte er den Atlas mit Holzschnitten, die nicht auf dem Taschen-Atlas seines Vaters basierten, sondern auf den Originalkarten von Ortelius. Es ist einer der letzten Atlanten, bei welchem die Karten Holzschnitte sind. Der Atlas ist unter Sammlern sehr begehrt, geschätzt für seine Seltenheit und das einzigartige Erscheinungsbild seiner Karten.
