Otherwise in very good condition. - Content: What was the purpose of the much-discussed ethnographic treatise “On the Jews”? Ascribed to the well-known Hellenistic author Hecataeus of Abdera (late fourth-century B.C.), the treatise itself, except for some excerpts recorded in Josephus Flavius’s celebrated apologetic Against Apion, has been lost. The authenticity of “On the Jews” has been disputed since the second century A.D., and with this detailed study, Bar-Kochva attempts to overcome the stalemate in the scholarly debate by proving that the treatise was a Jewish forgery written about too b.c. By examining the text in the light of available knowledge about Hellenistic and ancient Jewish history and culture, Bar-Kochva uncovers the religious stance of the author, Greek and Jewish practices and conceptions, and much about the history of the Jews in Judea and Egypt in the early and middle Hellenistic period. Bar-Kochva argues that the author of this treatise belonged to a group of conservative Jews whose practices were contrary to the contemporary trends in Alexandrian Jewry. They rejected the application of Greek philosophy and allegorical interpretations to the Holy scriptures, and they advocated and adhered to the use of Pentateuch Hebrew as the language for education and religious services. With a keen interest in Judea, they identified themselves with the Jews of the Holy Land. “On the Jews” was the manifesto of this group. Written at the peak period of the Hasmonean kingdom, its main purposes were to legitimize Jewish residence in Egypt, despite this being implicitly prohibited in the Pentateuch, and to justify the continued residence of Jews in a time of prosperity and expansion of the Jewish independent state. This fragmented piece provides religious legitimization for the settlement of Jews in Egypt and anticipates arguments that are raised even today by some circles of American Zionists. Bar-Kochva not only establishes the true authorship of the treatise, but by clarifying its content and structure, as well as the cultural and religious background of the Jewish author, he also establishes the purpose of the treatise, at last answering questions that had remained recalcitrant over the centuries. Bezalel Bar-Kochva is Professor of Ancient Jewish History, Tel Aviv University, and author of Judas Maccabaeus (Cambridge University Press, 1989) and The Seleucid Army (Cambridge University Press, 1976).Unser Preis EUR 33,00(inkl.
