_____________________________ Matthias Herrmann Mantua Mantua Text: Matthias Herrmann Insert: Bernhard Kleber English Design: Dorothea Bruniatti and Matthias Herrmann 2020, hardcover, linen 16 x 22cm, 208 pages ISBN 978-3-902993-93-9 € 33 Matthias Herrmann's latest artist book is based on his more than 2 years of research on the powerful rulers of Mantua in the 15th and 16th century, the Gonzagas and their first-class art collection. The result of his art-historical examination of the collection, which is now scattered throughout the world, was presented by Herrmann in an artistic intervention as 8 "Isole" (islands) both on site in the Palazzo Duale and in the Salzburg Traklhaus. He appropriated some of the works of the historical collection as photographs and thus "brought them back" to their place of origin. To others, he has "found" works of art that are related to them. The exhibition in the Traklhaus is a continuation of the presentation in Mantua. Here the spatial views are shown in larger formats than the works exhibited in Mantua in combination with the 8 Isole, thus explaining the eight themes from "Isabella düste" to "Rubens" and "Nachwelt". This type of photography, created for and in this exhibition, is new in the work of Matthias Herrmann. Just as he originally staged his body, in this series (in a kind of interpreted documentation) he places, for example, a house, important works of art and also his works in the context of the museum. It is a continuation of his previous photographic work into a meta-level. The artist's book, in turn, opens up an additional space which, while allowing both places their autonomous conditions, allows a new view from outside through the linking installation photos from the Salzburg exhibition, photographed by Rudolf Strobl. Matthias Herrmann's supplementary texts in the book also show the artist as "Private scholar" - he had set up a kind of "studiolo" in his Italian studio during his research - and created an unconventional field of tension in his ongoing occupation with visual culture. Matthias Herrmann, *1963 in Munich, Germany. Lives and works in Vienna.
