NOVISSIMA TOTIUS TERRARUM ORBIS TABULA
Carol Allard (1648-1706)
TITLENovissima Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula, per Carolum Allard.
PUBLISHER
Carol Allard Amsterdam, between 1683 and 1690
DESCRIPTIONNice old color example of Allard's rare Double Hemisphere map of the World. The map is embellished with allegorical scenes and a pair of map showing the Northern and Southern Polar Regions.
California is shown as an island on the Briggs Model, without Northwest Coast beyond the Straits of Anian. A single open Great Lake is shown, consistent with Jan Jansson's map of North America from 1636. South America is mis-projected and shown far wider than its actual shape. Australia and New Zealand reflects the recent discoveries of Abel Tasman.
The four corners are taken up with vignettes of the seasons, each with references to the Elements and the Zodiac. The side panels contain an extensive gazetteer, with a lettered key relating to the longitude and latitude grid. Below with the single-line printing privilege "Cum Privilegio ordinum Hollandiae et Westfrisiae".
Allard did not publish his own atlas until 1696, in which this map was replaced. The allegorical scenes are almost identical to that of the map "Nova Orbi Tabulas" by A.F. De Wit.
The map was carefully restored and the formerly sparse old colouring was refreshed with an artistic hand. Extremely decorative and rare world map.
At the moment there is no comparable map on the market.
MEASUREMENTS
Leaf: 61,5 x 52 cm; Plate: 59 x 49 cm.
CONDITION
Good and decorative condition with carefully restored old defects and damages. The centre fold was once burst and restored, at the bottom a little bit stained and with scrapings and scratchings. At the margins trimmed and remargined with new edges.
At the lower margin trimmed approx. 2 mm into the illustration and also new margins applied.
In spite of the defects mentioned a very decorative map in a splendid, detailed colouring.

KARTOGRAPH
Carol Allard (1648-1706)
TITELNovissima Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula, per Carolum Allard.
